PROJECT WHY STORY
Project WHY was conceived to answer a
series of queries :
- Why do children from underprivileged backgrounds perform poorly?
- What could be done to enhance their performance?
- What skills should be taught to them to better their employment
options?
- How could this be achieved in a replicable community driven model?
Project WHY set out to create a sound model
whereby quality education support in underprivileged areas, could be
spearheaded by parents even if they were illiterate.
The idea was to empower the community to
pool its resources and run a sound support programme for its
children.
Project WHY started with 40 children and spoken English
classes.
Today it reaches out to over 1000 children
and runs one early education programmes, four primary and
three secondary after school support programmes, a day care and life
skills programme for 20 children with disabilities, as well as three
computer centres.
The year gone by was a quiet one. It proved once again that the model we had selected and implemented
was a solid and durable one. After the now almost forgotten initial hiccups, the project ran almost on its own! The small impediments, if any
were taken on efficiently by the incredible team that steers the project. Once again the decision to employ local talent was more than vindicated. The children
past all their examinations class or Boards! Many children topped their class.
It was time to get our very own red carpet!
Looking at the project was enough to chase any blues or gloom.
A walk down memory lane even revealed some secrets one had forgotten.
2012 was also a year that brought to the fore quite surreptitiously one of the very first by lines we had conjured but somewhat forgotten:
where children dare to dream! It seems like having a well run project made us forget the importance of dreams and how they and they only
could keep the project vibrant and alive.
This could happen because of a short film made with the help of two
volunteers that brought a special meaning to Lennon's Imagine and the incredible dreamcatchers of our very
special kids. We still had a long way to go.
The terrifying incident that shook the whole country made us rethink our role. The brutal rape and murder of a young woman brought to
fore the fact that education alone cannot suffice to change mindsets. It is imperative for an organisation like ours that works with underprivileged
children to go beyond curriculum and sensitise our children to gender and other important issues. We intend doing just that.
2013 looks like being the year we revisit our mission!
